This time last year, I had fell out of love with UK music, I thought the scene had a bunch of artists that were just hopping from wave to wave, it felt like the integrity had gone. The truth is I was wrong, well partly. I was brushing all the artists with the same cloth.
I was looking in the wrong places to find my music. Scanning just the GRM Premieres and the numerous Thursday releases might have you thinking the way I thought. My solution to this negative thinking was just to deep dive into the underground of the UK and I've not looked back since.
During my deep dive I found artists like Jaz Karis, DC, Tiana Major9ine, Mnelia, Knucks, and many more. Some I knew before, but I wasn't following them heavily. These kind of artists aren't in the limelight as much as the rest because they make music for themselves and their world of comsumers. This is how cult followings start. A lot of these artists had projects already and plenty songs on their own channels. After downloading all these new tracks, I asked myself, why can't this music be at the forefront of our culture? The talent is most defintley within our borders its all about developing with the help of the scene to add a strong foundation to build from. I don't think the guys that don't follow trends have that backing yet. In America I see Kendrick and J. Cole get given all the flowers for the same formula.
Chip said in Darth Vader "These days if your not talking crud then yute dem don't wanna hear it". That's real. It's similar to what Loski was saying on the Zeze Millz interview about how is fans want to hear about the greaze over the substance.
I like the greaze don't get me wrong, but only from an authentic mouth. NOT A COPYCAT. It just feels like we as a culture are being pigeon holed to chat about devilish topics in order to make serious money from music. I think this reception from the industry encourages rappers to talk about stuff they don't do because they feel they will be accepted. How toxic is that. Lets all as a culture be true to ourselves and start getting behind the artists that want to create art, not just hybeasts.
