If you went to secondary school from 010 onwards Drill music was extremley prominent in your life growing up, because of this it means that their are a lot of "drill purists" people that only acknowledge the genre in it's pure form. The issue that this creates is that when artists try to evolve a lot of fans will say " I want the old them back".
That is a problem.
Drill Music in its natural form, acts as a microscope to what's going on in the streets. However, if a drill artist wants to really make music, they cannot rely on what's going on in streets to make music, it may be cool for now but in two years time the music will just sound unprogressive. They are going to have to rap with more substance. A lot of drill fans aren't ready for that though.
When Mizormac came home and dropped "Return of the Mac" it recieved slander, people where saying they want "the old miz back". I enjoyed the track. I liked how he was talking about his trauma, and his story in a drill flow, the song was deep and emotional, it showed to me that he is ahead of his time. He couldn't have came home from jail and made a normal drill track because that would have been a lack of evolution.
Don't get me wrong the raw drill tracks are a great starting point for artists but I don't think they should feel pressured to make the same music. Drill is hype, hype gets you in jail. Look at all your favourite drill crews they haven't lasted more than 2 years making consistent RAW music, until the police come knocking.
Recently drill artists have been trying to evolve their music by making this new york/party sounding drill. I think they are missing the mark with this, I think the perfect evolution for drill artist is the deep, introspective, story telling route. Headie One is an artist that is known for taking drill to new heights using this method and there's room for plenty more.
Look at Chicago drill rappers, the ones who stood the test of time are Lil Durk and G Herbo; this because they are telling stories and letting fans know what's on their mind. They are not afraid to show vunerability on their tracks.
So my final message is, UK drill rappers are talented, so they do not need to keep making the same style of music once they have gone clear. That doesn't mean sell out, but if they are not living a certain life anymore, rapping about it as if they are comes across non - authentic.
